CISAC will not only be in Cannes to attend MIDEM 2010 (January 23-27), but will also be organizing two key conferences and private meetings. By bringing together some of the most influential authors’ society leaders, CISAC aims to shed light on two of the most pressing topics facing creators and the industry today: smart metadata and multi-territorial licensing. CISAC will also be releasing the annual Global Economic Survey based on royalty collections data, which will offer exclusive insight into the impact of the economic crisis and the digital shift on creators’ livelihoods.
“Multi-territorial licensing – Where are we at?”
Monday, January 25 – 11:30-12:30 – Auditorium K, Level 4, Palais des festivals
CISAC’s Multi-territorial Licensing session deals with one of the most critical topics facing the music industry today—how are societies’ adjusting licensing structures to support the development of a legitimate digital music market in a way that adequately upholds authors’ rights? A panel of CEO’s from KODA, PRS for Music, SABAM and SACEM, moderated by CISAC’s Director General Eric Baptiste, will update participants on the latest licensing solutions that are making it easier to license repertoire and that balance the needs of mobile and online services with the aspirations of rights holders.
“Understanding Metadata and How it Could Improve Your Business”
Monday, January 25 – 17:30-18:30 – MidemNet Academy, Hall 01
As a part of MIDEMNet Academy, CISAC’s Smart Metadata session will look at trends in data management and international standards. FX Nuttall, a long time expert on digital copyright and CISAC’s Senior Technology Consultant, will guide participants through the emerging world of smart metadata, explain the benefits and return on investment of using international standards, and help participants successfully set up their digital business.
Smart Metadata has emerged at the forefront of music industry discussions as businesses are faced with exponential increases in the amount of information they must process. Without a new approach for handling all of this information and data, digital businesses would soon become unmanageable.
Here are just some of the questions that will be addressed during this session:
How can information on musical content be easily and automatically exchanged between all parties?
How can nano-transactions of musical content be monetised in a cost-efficient way?
Who should care about metadata?
Who needs to be involved in this process?
Looking Forward: CISAC Economic Report
During MIDEM, CISAC will also release its latest Global Economic Survey, which offers an in-depth analysis of the current state of authors’ rights based on 2008 figures for royalty collections. Like in previous years, the report will look at trends based on region, repertoire, type of rights and source of royalties to paint a detailed picture of how creators impact and are impacted by the greater economic environment.
