Australian Blues/Roots Guitarist Claude Hay is Deep Fried Satisfied on Ingot Rock Label Debut CD Coming September 21 August 19, 2010

ASHEVILLE, NC – Ingot Rock announces the signing of Australian blues/roots guitarist Claude Hay and the September 21 release of his label debut CD, Deep Fried Satisfied, distributed in the U.S. by Burnside Distribution.
Hailing from Australia’s Blue Mountains, Claude Hay is a prime example of the Do-It-Yourself work ethic, having hand-built his own twin-neck guitar, lovingly called “Betty,” and customized his tour van with a kitchen and a recording studio. In addition to building his own instruments, Hay also built his own house, too. And his musical approach is no different – he’s literally a one-man band, constructing layer-upon-layer of instruments live and in the studio until he has listeners guessing where the rest of the band is hiding.

Stony Plain Records Announces an August 24 Release Date for New CDs From World-Class Guitarists Duke Robillard – Passport to the Blues–and Ronnie Earl – Spread the Love June 25, 2010

EDMONTON, AB – Stony Plain Records announces an August 24 U.S. release date for new CDs from blues guitar masters Duke Robillard, Passport to the Blues; and Ronnie Earl, Spread the Love. Stony Plain Records is distributed in the U.S. by ADA.
Duke Robillard continues a fantastic year of successes, including winning yet another Blues Music Award in May from the Blues Foundation as “Best Traditional Male Blues Artist,” and a Grammy nomination for his last CD, Stomp! The Blues Tonight.
Never an artist to stand pat, Duke Robillard has released previous albums that have saluted his love for jump blues, jazz, swing, and even exotica. With Passport to the Blues, Duke puts his personal stamp on music that the new CD’s liner notes describe as his “grittiest roots – dirty, gutty, houserockin’, shack-shakin’, finger-bustin’, down-in-the-bottom git-tar blues.”
“This all-blues album was a chance for me to reach back deep into the soul of what I do and let out a lot of steam and emotion – especially on the guitar tracks,” says Robillard.
“I played a lot of my solos live with the band in the studio, just like we would on the road. The energy was fantastic. Making the album felt magical.”
And what a band it is, featuring Duke’s former Roomful of Blues bandmate Doug James on tenor and baritone saxes, Bruce Bears on keyboards, Brad Hallen on bass and Mark Teixeira on drums. Along with Robillard’s always on-the-money guitar work and soulful vocals, this unit has crafted another album that’s sure to be lining up for plaudits come awards time.
Passport to the Blues features a dozen tracks, all but one written by Robillard – the single exception being “Make It Rain,” written by Tom Waits (a song Duke played as lead guitarist with Waits on his 2006 tour) and his wife, Kathleen Brennan. In addition to the timeless themes of the blues, the new CD has a decidedly modern take on songs such as “Text Me,” a love song for the digital age, and “Honk Kong Suit,” which deals with the rapid pace of contemporary life. Of special note is the song,” The High Cost of Lovin’,” written in the 1980s by Duke and legendary songwriter Doc Pomus.
As Robillard sums up in the album’s liner notes, “All my life and career I’ve been fascinated by all kinds of roots music. Now I have the career and life I’ve wanted, playing anything that tickles me from country to blues to jazz to rock ‘n’ roll to New Orleans music. As long as it’s roots, I love it all and I can’t get enough.”
During a career that began when he joined Roomful of Blues, Ronnie Earl has charted a course that has led him to become a legendary musician; one recognized around the world for his dynamic and soulful playing. For his sixth Stony Plain album, Spread the Love, Ronnie Earl has raised the bar even further, with 14 instrumental tracks that speak volumes of his amazing fret work, whether on originals or paying tribute to his influences such as Albert Collins (“Backstroke”) and Kenny Burrell (“Chitlins Con Carne), or on the beautifully spiritual ballad written by Duke Pearson, (but perhaps best-known by trumpeter Donald Byrd’s version) “Christo Redentor.”
On his original songs, Earl continues to spread the message of love and hope through his music, which is loaded with the kind of energy, passion, and serious grooves only he can deliver. He tips his hat to others such as Jackie Robinson (“Blues for Jackie Robinson”), Duane Allman (“Skyman”) and with the help of his regular keyboardist, Dave Limina, gives a playful musical nod to legendary pianist Otis Spann on “Spann’s Groove.” The other members of Ronnie’s band, The Broadcasters, are Lorne Entress on drums and Jim Mouradian on bass.
Ronnie Earl has been hailed by musicians and critics alike as one of the premier blues guitarists of his generation. He’s played with such greats as Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Earl King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Allman Brothers Band.
Reviews of his albums typically become a veritable love-fest, as critics try to come up with new descriptions for his amazing guitar work. “When it’s time for spiritual rejuvenation, it’s time for a visit from Ronnie Earl, pastor at the church of tone. Come in, listen, and be healed,!” – Vintage Guitar. “Blues has no better essayist in taste, tone and tension than Strat magician Ronnie Earl … Earl’s got his mojo working overtime,” –
Guitar World. “Ronnie Earl can still take your breath away … Earl’s playing has remained as inspiring as his humility, gratitude, and altruism.” – Guitar Player. “Earl is at his mesmerizing best when communicating with an audience … The all-instrumental set allows the subtlety of Earl’s genius to shine.” – Boston Herald. “His deeply personal process of squeezing out taut, precise notes during many slow passages makes for riveting listening.” – Downbeat.

ARIA Releases 2009 Wholesale Sales Figures February 9, 2010

For the first time since 2003, the Australian record industry is growing. After six years of decline, the market has turned a corner and appears to be returning to growth.
In line with the trends observed in the middle of 2009, the wholesale sales of sound recordings and music videos for the full year 2009 have demonstrated the Australian market’s first annual period of growth since revenues peaked in 2003. Specifically, wholesale revenues over the full year increased almost 5% when compared to 2008. An increase in overall digital revenues was the key contributing factor to this growth, with digital albums demonstrating an increase of over 60% by revenue, more than offsetting the relatively modest decline in physical CD sales
Mr Ed St John, ARIA Chairman and President and CEO of Warner Music Australasia, commenting on the figures, said, “Today’s results prove beyond doubt that the Australian music industry is experiencing a healthy state of growth. The physical retail sector that sells CDs and DVDs has stabilized and sharpened its focus, whilst the digital retail sector continues to grow strongly. Music sales were very strong during the period of Christmas 2009 and they prove that music remains a key priority for many Australian consumers.”
Sales of physical product continued to decline across last year, although the decline in the volume of CD album sales was slight (less than 1%) and was more than offset by the increase in digital album sales. Two of the year’s biggest sellers, Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed A Dream” and Michael Buble’s “Crazy Love”, achieved the greater majority of their sales via traditional physical retail outlets, making a significant contribution to the volume of CD albums sold through the year.
Unlike the CD album market, sales of CD singles were down over 60% in both volume and value. However, this decline was more than offset by the substantial growth in digital track sales, now up to almost 36m in volume, an increase of nearly 44% on the previous year.
Consumers continued to demonstrate their growing adoption and acceptance of the digital music format, producing overall digital revenue growth of 46.23%. Digital track sales were up 42% in value and digital albums up over 66%. In addition, digital albums now account for 7.5% of overall album sales by volume, up from 4.35% across the same period last year.
However, with respect to some artists, a substantially higher percentage of overall album sales are now occurring in the digital format. Examples during 2009 include La Roux’s self- titled debut, Mumford and Sons’ “Sigh No More” and Lisa Mitchell’s “Wonder” (with more than 20% of their sales being generated in the digital format), and The Temper Trap’s “Conditions”, The Script’s self-titled album, Paul Dempsey’s “Everything Is True”, Ladyhawke’s self-titled release and Gossip’s “Music For Men”, all in excess of 15%.
The ARIA 2009 Top 100 Singles and Album Charts proved a boon for local artists, with 18 local artists making the top 100 singles chart for the year, and an incredible 26 local titles in the top 100 album chart, lead by Hilltop Hoods at #12 with “State Of The Art”. The ARIA End Of Decade Charts featured Australian artists at the top of both the Top 100 Singles and Top 100 Album Charts, with Guy Sebastian’s “Angels Brought Me Here” and Delta Goodrem’s “Innocent Eyes” the highest selling releases respectively through the 2000’s.
Commenting on what 2010 holds for the business, Ed St John was cautiously optimistic, saying “We’re pleased with the figures that we’ve seen today, but have a tremendous amount of work to do to stem the tide of illegal file sharing, which continues to erode profits and hamper investment into the local industry. We remain hopeful that the ISPs will work with us to address this pressing problem and help the growth of the legitimate market, something that will, of course, also be to their benefit. In the meantime, music fans can look forward to many exciting new releases this year from established artists and new names. As an industry, we have a lot to look forward to across the year.”
