Houston’s Mean Gene Kelton Dies in Auto Accident December 30, 2010

The Houston music scene lost a legend Tuesday night when Mean Gene Kelton, driving his Ford Explorer on FM 2100 in Crosby on Tuesday evening attempted to pass a car stopped to make a left turn and collided with a school bus. The bus was carrying the Crosby ninth grade girls’ basketball team. Kelton was killed in the wreck. The occupants of the bus escaped serious injury.

Kelton was slated to headline a New Year’s Eve Day party in Crosby, Texas.

The set documents recordings made by Strachwitz between 1954 and 1971 in the San Francisco bay area, and offers an invaluable snapshot of the music that could be heard in the region during the evolutionary and revolutionary years of the late-1950s and the decade of the ’60s.

PHILADELPHIA, PA— Bernie Wilson, a baritone member of the rhythm and blues group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, has died reports Cousin Faith Peace-Mazzccua (Mah-ZOO-Kah)

Wilson, 64-year-old died shortly after midnight the day after Christmas at Kresson View Center in Voorhees, NJ., following a stroke and a heart attack.

ATLANTA, GA – King Mojo Records announces a February 8 release for Collection, a 2-CD compilation of tracks from Big Shanty, whose blistering sound has been described as everything from “death metal blues” to “heavy metal funk.”

The double-disc set also includes five previously out-of-print live tracks. Many of Big Shanty’s longtime friends join in the jams on Collection, including Wet Willie bassist Jack Hall; guitarist Spencer Kirkpatrick, formerly of Hydra; up-and-coming guitar hotshot Liz Melendez; and legendary jam-band godfather, Col. Bruce Hampton.

Maria Muldaur gets her third Grammy Nomination with Stony Plain December 20, 2010

Maria Muldaur has earned another Grammy nomination – her third for Stony Plain. The nomination, in the “Best Traditional Folk Album” category, is for Garden of Joy (SPCD-1332), a fun-filled collection of jug band material that hearkens back to her very first recordings with the Even Dozen Jug Band and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, recorded in the early ’60s.

The City Champs’ new album The Set Up is out now, and the critics are giving it an enthusiastic response (check out press quotes below). After touring the East Coast the Champs returned to Memphis to take part in several new projects. After taping a travel segment for MSN.com, they took part in the filming of a new Memphis music documentary.
