HOUSTON, TX Five time Blues Music Award nominee Rich DelGrosso and BMA winner Jonn Del Toro Richardson have joined forces to create a new CD, Time Slips on By, set for release on January 18 on the Mandolin Blues label, which promises to be one of the most exciting blues/roots albums of the new year.
The new CD will be distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution.
Time Slips on By was produced by acclaimed saxman Mark ‘Kaz’ Kazanoff, engineered by Stuart Sullivan and recorded at Austin’s Wire Studios. Special guests on the CD include accordion wizard Joel Guzman and Australia’s blues queen Fiona Boyes on backing vocals.
Rich DelGrosso and Jonn Del Toro Richardson will celebrate the release of the new CD with a special show at The Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club in Houston on Saturday, January 22.
Time Slips on By is a collection of 14 original songs from the fertile blues territory of Southeast Texas, melding traditional blues with the Tex-Mex influences prevalent in the area to create a new sound that is positively infectious. It brings together two of the finest and most unique performers in the genre.
DelGrosso’s mandolin playing has garnered him five Blues Music Award nominations; while Del Toro Richardson is an Albert King and BMA winner for his fiery guitar playing with Diunna Greenleaf’s band, and also backed Pinetop Perkins on his Grammy and BMA award-winning ‘Best Traditional Blues Album of the Year,’ Last of the Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen.
On Times Slips on By, the duo are backed by their favorite rhythm section of Houston players Carl Owens on drums and Ed Starkey on bass. Adding to that foundation, producer Kazanoff brought in some of Austin’s finest musicians, including, keyboardist Nick Connolly, accordionist Joel Guzman and The Texas Horns. Houston legend Sonny Boy Terry showcases his harmonica on two songs and Fiona Boyes adds her soulful vocals backing the boys on one track.
At the heart of the new CD are the talents of DelGrosso and Del Toro Richardson. DelGrosso’s work recalls such greats as Yank Richell and Johnny Young, while taking the instrument to new heights with his amplified National Resonator mandolin, which coupled with his gravely baritone voice, give him his unique sound. A longtime writer for Blues Revue magazine, DelGrosso is also a teacher and regularly travels around the world as a blues ambassador.
Jonn Del Toro Richardson is a guitarist, singer and songwriter, whose fiery guitar work and Tex-Mex roots run deep in the Southeast Texas soil, adding new spice to the mix. In addition to his award winning work with Diunna Greenleaf and Pinetop Perkins, Del Toro Richardson has been in-demand for both live shows and recording sessions with a host of other blues greats, including Hubert Sumlin and Otis Taylor.
