Debra Regur Named Publicist of the Year

Debra Regur, publicity director for independent label Blind Pig Records, has been named by the Blues Foundation as the recipient of the 2011 “Keeping The Blues Alive Award” for Publicist. The KBA Award is presented by the non-profit foundation to individuals and organizations in recognition of their significant contributions to the blues music world.

The KBAs are awarded strictly on the basis of merit by a panel of select blues professionals to those working to actively promote and market the music. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Memphis on Saturday, February 5, 2011.

Ms. Regur, pictured here with blues icon Magic Slim, has been the publicity director for Blind Pig Records for nearly a decade. Through her tireless efforts to promote the label’s artists, she has helped many of them significantly advance their careers. Her daily contact with all forms of media has increased their appeal and enlarged their fan base, while bringing them greater recognition and critical accolades beyond just blues outlets. Her efforts have resulted in features and reviews of Blind Pig artists on National Public Radio, in national print and internet publications, on syndicated radio programs, and in regional and specialty publications. She also provides valuable tour support by advancing touring dates to publicize local shows and appearances.

The artists on the label are appreciative of her dedication and love of the music. One example of the kind of up-and-coming performer who has benefited from Regur’s expertise is singer John Németh, who says, “Club owners, promoters, and myself know that the seats will be filled because I have the best publicist in the business on the job, Debra from Blind Pig.”

Past and current artists on the label’s roster that contributed statements in support of her nomination included Elvin Bishop, Roy Rogers, Tommy Castro, and Kenny Neal.

Label President Edward Chmelewski said, “For Debra, promoting the blues and blues artists is more than a job, it’s a mission. She is passionate about the music, its heritage, and its future. And she’s just as committed to the individual artists themselves; she cares about them in a very personal way and works hard to advance each and every one of their careers. Recognition for her work and achievements is long overdue.”
