SEVERN, MD – Severn Records announces the signing of veteran bluesman Big Joe Maher and the February 15 release of his new CD, You Can’t Keep a Big Man Down, with national distribution by City Hall Records.

The new CD was produced by Kevin McKendree, a long-time keyboard player for Delbert McClinton’s band, who also contributed piano and organ on the sessions.

International Blues Challenge 2011 Entries Selected November 30, 2010

The entrants for International Blues Challenge 2011 are in. Since only 28 entrants are listed in the IBC Youth Showcase, the Kentucky Blues Society is one of only 28 Blues Societies in the world that has entrants in all 3 IBC live categories! And with Ryan in with Atlanta’s entry there is even more to show the world that Kentucky, the state where much of the blues began, continues its significant contributions to the blues.

The Kentucky Blues Society is sending three entrants: Tee Dee Young, Wayne Harper and The Diphthongs. Also going is local musician Ryan Stiles who will be performing as part of the Atlanta Blues society entry, Mike Bourne & Atlanta Boogie.

False Rumors Spread About Death of Blues Legend November 30, 2010

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) – Fans of blues legend B.B. King rode an emotional roller coaster Monday after false rumors spread across the internet saying the music icon was dead.

The hoax began with Musicouch.com user JoeSixPack’s false headline: “Blues Great B.B. King Dead at 85.” According to the story, died after suffering a ‘stroke.’ The story mentioned ‘a private service’ next week, and a ‘public gathering’ after the holidays.

Little Steven’s Underground Garage posted its highest Arbitron ratings ever this year, with a weekly audience of over 1.2 million listeners in the US alone. Cumulative listenership (CUME) increased over sixteen percent from 2009, while average quarter hour listenership (AQH) increased by nearly thirty percent in the same period.

Broadcast in over 200 markets (including Canada, 9 countries in Europe and over 40 countries around the world via the American Forces Network and Voice of America), it’s one of the most successful rock and roll radio shows of the past 30 years.

ZZ Top to Tour Australia November 29, 2010

ZZ Top have announced a five-date national tour to tie in with their previously confirmed show at the Byron Bay Blues Festival in April.

The Texan blues-rock legends, famous as much for their long beards as hits like Legs and Gimme All Your Lovin’, will play gigs in Melbourne, Newcastle, Wollongong and Sydney.

Aspiring harmonica player Chris Harper found one way of entering the music business was to start his own record label. Determined to follow his dream, he sold his convention display company in Switzerland, and along with Chicago blues producer Dave Katzman, launched Swississippi Records.

Parcek Recognized for His 2010 Label Debut From Redstar Entertainment, “The Mathematics of Love”

BOSTON, MA – Redstar Entertainment announces that label artist Peter Parcek has been nominated by The Boston Music Awards as “Blues Artist of the Year.” Parcek’s nomination is the result of the overwhelming critical acclaim for his 2010 national album debut, “The Mathematics of Love.” This is the first Boston Music Awards nomination for the local guitar legend.

2010 will mark the twenty-third year that The Boston Music Awards has honored local artists. The December 5th event is billed as a “rolling party with multiple stages and extended sets from nominated artists.” Peter Parcek and his current band will be one of the acts on hand to perform.

Tom Waits to Release First Photo Illustrated Book of His Poetry November 26, 2010

Tom Waits is collaborating with photography Michael O’Brien to publish a book of poetry called Hard Ground. The book has been described as a “portrait of homelessness,” combining Waits’s poetry with O’Brien’s images of the people who “live on the hard ground.”

Although this is the first official collaboration between Waits and O’Brien, the photographer had previously taken pictures of Waits, and one of his photographs was used as the album art for Waits’s Glitter and Doom Live.

Allman Brothers Band Gets Back The Beacon And Gets An Apology Too November 26, 2010

NEW YORK On Monday the Allman Brothers Band announced that it would return to its homestead at the Beacon Theater after a one-year absence, at a news conference where Gregg Allman and his bandmates received a surprising apology from executives at MSG Entertainment, which runs the theater.

Speaking from the stage of the Beacon James L. Dolan, the chairman of Madison Square Garden, said: “I told Gregg before, our apologies for last year. That won’t happen again.”

Celebrated boogie-woogie pianist Eden Brent enjoyed a momentous 2010. The gorgeous Mississippi native released a new album, ‘Ain’t Got No Troubles,’ on Yellow Dog Records, which debuted at No 5 on the Billboard Blues chart and No 1 on the iTunes Blues chart, won her third Blues Music Award for Piano Player of the Year, received an artist fellowship from the Mississippi Arts Commission and was greeted with ecstatic reviews for her new CD.
