Groups Ask Targeted Enforcement For Intellectual Property March 29, 2010

The U.S. government should restrict its actions enforcing intellectual-property (IP) law to those “violations that cause the greatest harm in clearly settled areas of law,” six public interest organizations said today.

In comments with the new Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator, the groups said in addition that in addition to enforcement policies, the government “should also be open to novel and creative solutions that work within the existing system of balance,” such as considering “whether facilitating legal access to content through mechanical licensing at reasonable rates would prove a better way to discourage infringement and benefit the industry as a whole than the blunter solutions often recommended by the entertainment industry.”

White House Urged To Step Up Efforts To Protect Intellectual Property March 29, 2010

A wide coalition representing American movie, television and music industry and labor groups urged the Federal Government to bolster its efforts to protect intellectual property and protect the jobs and wages lost because of content theft.

In response to a request for public comment by the White House’s Office of Intellectual Property Enforcement, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA), the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) submitted a joint filing that outlined the organizations’ collective views.

AFM Statement On Intellectual Property Protection March 29, 2010

As part of efforts to enact the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act of 2008 (PRO-IP Act), AFM helped to lobby for the creation of a new position, the Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC), within the executive branch. The IPEC is responsible for coordinating intellectual property policy across federal agencies and reporting to the President on intellectual property enforcement programs.

Bipartisan House Opposition To Performance Royalty Reaches 260 March 29, 2010

Reps. Suzanne Kosmas (D-FL) and Tim Murphy (R-PA) have become the latest House co-sponsors of a bipartisan Congressional resolution opposing a performance tax on local radio stations. The Local Radio Freedom Act (H. Con. Res. 49), which opposes “any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge,” is now backed by 260 House lawmakers. An identical Senate resolution is supported by a bipartisan group of 27 U.S. Senators.
