Microsoft is preparing to launch a new online music streaming and downloading website to rival Spotify.

This new service could be launched by the end of July, although the IT giant is still examining how it may work.

In exchange for listening to a minute’s worth of adverts every half an hour, users of Spotify can stream music for free while a premium service is available without any adverts for a subscription fee.

Mr Bale said that Microsoft’s service will be similar with promotion taking place through MSN and other Microsoft networks.

‘We are looking at how other similar businesses have structured their business models and trying to figure out what will work best for both consumer and Mircosoft,’ he told the newspaper.

During June, Spotify announced that music available to stream on its subscription service had been upgraded to CD equivalent quality.
